   Madeline Levine has written an interesting, and potentially controversial book entitled The Price of Privilege.  In it, she describes the somewhat surprising observation that affluent adolescents have a surprisingly high rate of anxiety and depression and she discusses the values that contribute to this situation.  One of her observations is that “overparenting” (my term) and protecting your child from disappointment and consequences can contribute to the failure of the teen to develop a strong sense of self. One of my other favorite points in this book is her request for parents to make sure they are accountable for the behaviors that they are requesting that their child model.
